Welcome to Reception

Our Early Years Foundation Stage at Blacklow Brow is a safe, secure and happy place to be and we provide no barriers learning. We provide exciting experiences and enhancements in the continuous provision creating a love of learning, such as chicks hatching and butterflies being released.

Their Literacy skills are developed through Phonics (Read, write, inc), World Book Day, Writing Walls and Library visits. The love of early reading underpins all we do and children and parents are encouraged to read at home through home readers from the first week of term. Children are confident in using numbers, shape, space and measures, implementing their mathematical skills. Our children understand the world around them; and are able to respond appropriately. They explore with media and materials and are able to express their creativity. Numicon, Maths Mastery and number of the week have supported the children’s progress and achievement. Songs and rhymes are at the forefront of our curriculum, and children participate with enthusiasm and enjoyment. We engage in Nursery Rhyme Week, and the children enjoy dressing as their favourite nursery rhyme characters and singing their favourite songs.

We celebrate achievements in all areas of learning, encouraging risk taking, which develops a confident approach to learning new skills. The children have a strong sense of achievement and take pride in all that they do. They enjoy celebration assemblies and sharing the successes of their friends. Parents/carers sharing exciting learning and activities that the children have enjoyed at home. Stay and Play sessions and workshops provide support and information to extend learning at home. Weekly home learning letters, provide information about what children have learned in school each week, and offer ideas and suggestions for developing skills at home.
