Welcome to Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

We have an exciting year ahead planned. Please see our Medium-term plan below for an outline of the topics taught for the current academic and the Pen Profiles for the objectives covered.

This year we will bring learning to life with trips including a trip to Tatton Park this Autumn to learn all about what life was like during Anglo-Saxon and Viking times. During this we will immerse ourselves in Anglo-Saxon and Viking culture and discover more about how they lived and survived in ancient Britain. During the Spring term, we will visit an art gallery to explore different artists work using shade and tone and in Summer we will spend a week at KIND taking part in STEM activities, exploring science in a hands-on approach. Please see the newsletters and website for more trip information.

The year 5 children have developed a love of vocabulary throughout last year and we will be continuing to develop this through every subject where the children can show off their knowledge and understanding of words including their origin and morphology.

Please make sure that you are using our online resources as much as possible to support your child’s learning. Spelling Shed has games dedicated to each spelling pattern, Times tables Rockstars is a fun way of the children practising their multiplication knowledge, while Purple Mash has lots of fantastic educational games, resources and books for your child to use at home.

Reading is so important to your child’s development and a big focus in school, so please make sure reading is done at least 10 minutes every day and this is recorded in the reading record. This could be reading to a sibling or relative too. We have a great range of books in school so do ask if you’d like any recommendations. Don’t forget to sign their planners and ensure that they are brought in every day so they can be used as a resource to support and enhance learning.

PE is on a Tuesday and Thursday each week where the children currently take part in a range of sporting activities including yoga, judo, dance, gymnastics and invasion games. Please ensure that kits are brought in at the start of the week ready.

Homework is given out on Friday and needs to be handed in on Wednesday so it can be marked and feedback given. If your child is finding their homework challenging, please speak to the class teacher or write a note in the planner so that extra time can be taken to support your child.

Spellings are set on Monday and tested on Friday. Please make sure your child is taking home their spelling book and practising each night (either on spelling shed on interactive games or in their blue book)

Please see our enrichment timetable where the children can sign up for a wide range of different afterschool clubs including; mindfulness, sports activities, choir and homework support. These clubs will change each half term so that all children will have a chance to take part throughout the year.

We are using the Class Dojo App so you can find out more about what’s happening in school and check to see how many house points have been awarded to your child during each day.

Year 5 is a very important year for children in preparation for their SATS next year. Many of the skills taught in year 5 form the foundations and building blocks for learning during year 6. The homework given each week will support and reinforce learning taking part in class.

As part of our whole school attendance focus, we are trying to earn a star each week. Please check the attendance poster outside our door for each week’s percentage and ensure your child is in school and on time each day.
