At Blacklow Brow, we strongly believe that music helps to develop a pupil’s creativity, imagination, listening skills, confidence and their ability to express their thoughts and feelings. Developing a musical interest can foster many transferable life skills. Through music, pupils can develop listening, performance and evaluation skills as well as developing the skills required for effective learning such as perseverance and commitment. Music offers pupils the opportunity for children to explore their learning, make mistakes and build confidence to develop as independent thinkers.

Surprisingly, music can be linked closely to a child’s ability to process language’s sound structures. Children with a musical experience have proven to develop phonological awareness at a much faster rate than their peers without musical knowledge. This all stems from a child’s ability to understand rhythm, which can be taught effortlessly with music. This is most apparent with dyslexic children, who find it much easier to understand language’s rhythm when introduced via music.

Music is taught in a sequenced, progressive way from early in early years and foundation stage. It is timetabled weekly in both key stage 1 and 2. Our curriculum and teaching is supported by the multi award winning ‘Charanga’ as well as external CPD and support through visits from the Knowsley music service.
